ASUU Suspends Strike in Three Lagos Universities, Lecturers to Resume

By AAdebola Muili

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in three Lagos State-owned universities has suspended its industrial action, directing lecturers to return to classrooms with immediate effect.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The suspension was announced on Friday in a joint statement signed by the union leaders, following a dispute over staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements with the Lagos State Government.

The development is expected to pave the way for the restoration of academic activities in the three institutions, which were affected by the industrial action.

However, the union made it clear that the suspension does not mean the dispute has been fully resolved, as discussions with the state government will continue until all outstanding issues concerning lecturers’ welfare are addressed.

The statement was jointly signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee of ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUTECH.

The union leaders described the suspension as a step towards restoring normal academic activities while pursuing the resolution of the issues that led to the strike.

They expressed appreciation to the media, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, students, parents, university authorities and other stakeholders for their support during the dispute.

The statement also acknowledged the contributions of pro-worker organisations, including the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, for their advocacy and solidarity throughout the negotiations.

ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and quality university education, while thanking students and parents for their patience and understanding during the disruption.

The union’s decision is expected to bring relief to students and parents, although the full resolution of the dispute remains dependent on the outcome of ongoing discussions with the Lagos State Government.
