LASU condemns assault on student, begins disciplinary action

The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the alleged assault of one of its students at a privately owned hostel outside the university’s premises, following the circulation of a video showing a woman physically confronting a female student.

The incident, which involved students of the university’s College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, has generated reactions on social media, with calls for appropriate action against those involved.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 4, 2026, the university said the incident occurred at a privately owned hostel outside its campus premises, stressing that the matter had already been reported to the police by the assaulted student.

The statement, signed by LASU’s Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi A. Thomas-Onashile, said the matter had been addressed through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

“Nevertheless, the University has initiated due disciplinary processes in line with its established rules and regulations,” the institution said.

Reports by the Lagos State University Students’ Union had earlier identified the assaulted student as Adebayo Oluwatumininu, a 300-level Nursing student of LASUCOM. The union said she sustained an eye injury and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical assessment and treatment.

The students’ union also reported that the mother of another LASUCOM student, identified as Hassan Temiloluwa, was taken into police custody in connection with the alleged assault, while Temiloluwa was to appear before the university’s disciplinary committee. The circumstances that led to the confrontation, however, were not independently established in the reports.

The viral video showed a woman grabbing, pushing and repeatedly striking a female student inside a hostel room, while another person attempted to intervene. However, claims circulating on social media about what triggered the confrontation could not be independently verified.

Reacting to the development, LASU Management said it “unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” declaring that assault, intimidation or harassment of students, staff or visitors was unacceptable, whether within or outside the university premises.

The institution reiterated that its students were expected to be “worthy in character and learning”, in line with its mission of producing graduates who excel both academically and morally.

LASU advised students to conduct themselves responsibly, avoid situations that could compromise their safety and promptly report concerns to the appropriate authorities.

The university also urged parents to support its mission by engaging constructively with the institution, respecting institutional boundaries and encouraging their wards to uphold discipline and integrity.

LASU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being, safety and academic success of its students, promising to continue providing a secure and conducive learning environment.
