DEMOCRACY DAY: FG reaffirms commitment to democratic governance, national unity

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting the nation as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Friday during the special Juma’at prayer organised as part of activities commemorating the 27th Democracy Day celebration scheduled for June 12.

According to the minister, the solemn prayer session offered Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and seek divine guidance for peace, unity and prosperity.

“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration,” Idris said.

He noted that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of citizens.

The minister paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, describing him as a symbol of courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief MKO Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he stated.

Idris described Democracy Day as an opportunity to celebrate the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule.

He observed that 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance demonstrated the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy and the determination of citizens to uphold democratic values.

The minister further stated that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government would continue to pursue policies aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and fostering national cohesion.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting our nation,” he said.

Calling for unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, Idris urged citizens to reject division and embrace dialogue in the interest of national development.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation,” he added.

He also prayed for God’s guidance for the nation’s leaders, protection for security personnel and enduring peace and prosperity for the country.
