Police Warn Against Electoral Malpractices, Restrict Quasi-Security Groups From Osun Poll

The Nigeria Police Force has barred quasi-security groups, including the Amotekun Corps, vigilantes and hunters, from participating in security operations for Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

The police said on Thursday that only constitutionally recognised security agencies would be deployed for the poll, warning that anyone who violates the law or engages in electoral malpractice would be arrested and prosecuted.

Speaking at a town hall meeting held at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters, Osogbo, the police also disclosed that a mobile court had been put in place to ensure the speedy prosecution of persons arrested for electoral offences.

The police said it had already informed the quasi-security groups that their services would not be required during the election.

“We have spoken to them and told them that we will not need them for the period of this election,” the police said.

It also warned its personnel against dereliction of duty, stressing that police officers found compromising their responsibilities during the election would equally face appropriate sanctions.

The police urged parents to warn their children and wards against allowing themselves to be used for electoral malpractice, violence or other unlawful activities.

It further warned politicians, voters, electoral officials and other stakeholders against carrying arms or engaging in acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election.

According to the police, any person arrested for violating electoral laws would be prosecuted, irrespective of status.

The police assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to protect voters, electoral officials and other stakeholders, while urging the people of Osun State to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the electoral process.

It commended all stakeholders for their cooperation and support towards ensuring a peaceful election.
