Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a suspected armed robbery operation in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, killing one suspect and recovering two vehicles, a locally made pistol, ammunition and a cache of suspected stolen property.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, following a distress call from a concerned resident who alerted the police to the robbery.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, saying operatives of Onipanu Division, under the Ota Area Command, immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving the alert.
According to him, the responding patrol team arrived at the location at about 1:45 a.m., but the suspected robbers opened fire on sighting the operatives, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
He said the encounter resulted in the neutralisation of one of the suspects, while other members of the gang escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
A subsequent search of the scene led to the recovery of two vehicles, identified as a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, as well as several items suspected to have been stolen.
The recovered property included HP and Dell laptop computers, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones, a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio, a Wi-Fi device, clothing, an OPay ATM card, a deck, two MP devices and other household items.
The police also recovered a locally made pistol, two live cartridges and seven expended cartridges from the deceased suspect.
Other items recovered from him included a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number (NIN) cards and cash.
Babaseyi said the command had intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire.
He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits, as well as determine their possible connections with other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their prompt response, professionalism and courage in foiling the robbery operation.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive and intelligence-led policing, sustained patrol operations and rapid response to security concerns across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, continue their lawful activities without apprehension and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the police.
The police commissioner assured residents that the command remained alert and accessible, stressing its commitment to protecting lives and property across Ogun State.
