NAFDAC uncovers illegal herbal product factory in Lagos

By Adebola Muili

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters were found bearing a falsified registration number belonging to a cough syrup.

The agency disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, following an investigation prompted by a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.

According to NAFDAC, its investigative team conducted surveillance before uncovering the facility and discovering the three variants of the herbal product bearing registration number A7-1827L.

Verification through the agency’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal showed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup.

The finding indicated that the registration number had been fraudulently used on the herbal products.

NAFDAC said the company’s managing director and chief executive officer was absent during the operation, while the facility’s manager was arrested for further interrogation.

The agency urged members of the public to provide credible information on suspected illegal manufacturing activities to help identify and curb such operations.

It advised members of the public to contact its call centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or send information to reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.
