The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, on Friday contained a fire involving a leaking gas tanker at Owode Elede along Ikorodu Road, preventing what officials described as a major disaster.

LASTMA disclosed this in a statement, saying the six-tyre mini gas tanker developed a mechanical fault while travelling inward Ikorodu, leading to a leakage of compressed gas that later ignited.

The agency said its Rescue and Recovery Team and firefighters responded promptly to the scene, bringing the fire under control before it could spread to nearby property or endanger road users.

Despite the incident, LASTMA said traffic remained largely uninterrupted as its officers diverted vehicles through one serviceable lane and part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor to ease movement along the affected axis.

The General Manager of LASTMA commended the coordinated response by emergency agencies, saying, “The swift intervention and synergy demonstrated by all emergency responders were instrumental in averting a potentially devastating incident.”

He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, exercise caution and cooperate with emergency responders during such incidents.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring smooth traffic flow across Lagos State.
