FG intensifies efforts to free Nigerians in captivity, says Akume

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to secure the release of all Nigerians held in captivity, assuring citizens that ongoing security operations and other coordinated interventions will continue until those abducted regain their freedom.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, gave the assurance on Friday while receiving a delegation of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), led by its National Amirah, Dr. Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza.

Akume said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians, expressing confidence that current efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes would produce positive results.

“Our mission on earth, our goal on earth is to promote, to preserve, and to prolong life. It’s not to shorten it. The government is doing everything to secure the release of all who are captured,” he said.

The SGF urged faith-based organisations to continue praying for the Tinubu administration, noting that they play a critical role in promoting peace, national unity and development.

He commended FOMWAN for its contributions to nation-building through advocacy, humanitarian services and moral guidance, describing the association as a dependable partner in advancing social progress.

Akume acknowledged that governance is challenging in every society but maintained that effective leadership is measured by its ability to respond decisively to emerging challenges. He added that the Renewed Hope Agenda places premium on women’s empowerment and values the contributions of faith-based organisations to national cohesion and development.

Earlier, Hamza said FOMWAN remained committed to promoting Islamic values through Da’awah while supporting the socio-economic development of women, youths and children through education, healthcare, humanitarian services, skills acquisition and entrepreneurship.

She commended the Federal Government’s efforts in security, education, humanitarian response, social protection and women’s development, but called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger community engagement and enhanced protection of vulnerable communities to tackle insecurity more effectively.

The FOMWAN leader also appealed for greater collaboration with the Federal Government, including support for the renovation of the association’s national secretariat, establishment of additional skills acquisition and women empowerment centres, provision of an operational vehicle and assistance for its National Annual Conference scheduled for August in Abia State.
