Lagos, Police Intensify Campaign Against Cultism, Drug Abuse in Schools

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, in partnership with the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), has intensified efforts to combat cultism and drug abuse among students with a sensitisation programme held at the Idi-Araba School Complex.

According to a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, the campaign, organised through Education District VI, focused on educating students on the dangers of cult-related activities, substance abuse, bullying and other social vices capable of destroying their future.

The statement noted that the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District VI, Mojisola Christiana Yusuff urged students to remain committed to their education and personal growth.

She encouraged the students to reject negative influences and embrace discipline, determination and self-confidence.

“Say yes to your studies, yes to growth, yes to greatness,” she was quoted as saying, while reminding the students that they were destined for success.

Also speaking at the event, POCACOV Coordinator, Olivia Ugochukwu warned against cultism, violence and drug abuse, noting that many young people who embrace such lifestyles often end up facing imprisonment and lifelong struggles.

She advised the students to resist peer pressure and associate with positive-minded friends and role models.

The statement further quoted the Divisional Police Officer of Itire Police Station, John A. Adeniran as cautioning students against criminal activities, stressing that cultism and substance abuse often derail academic pursuits and push youths into crime.

He urged the students to avoid bad company, shun bullying and maintain open communication with parents and teachers.

According to the statement, the sensitisation programme forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government and security agencies to safeguard students and promote a violence-free learning environment across schools in the state.
