President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with the Senate expected to screen the nominees ahead of the expiration of existing tenures.
The nominations include Professor Mustapha Aliu for the North-West, Bashir Muhammed Umar for the North-Central, and Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola for the South-West, while Dr Bala Bila has been reappointed as the national commissioner representing the North-East.
The President also nominated retired permanent secretary, Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, as resident electoral commissioner for Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, from Jigawa State, to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The nominations were contained in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Aliu will replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West national commissioner, while Umar will succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.
Babalola, the incumbent resident electoral commissioner in Osun State, is to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi as the South-West national commissioner when his tenure expires on October 24.
The President urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation of the nominees in view of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January.
The Senate is expected to scrutinise the nominees before their appointments are confirmed.
