LAWMA Arrests Seven in Ipaja-Ayobo for Illegal Waste Dumping on Road Medians

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (Lagos Waste Management Authority) has apprehended seven individuals in the Ipaja-Ayobo axis of Lagos State for allegedly engaging in indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians.

The Authority said the enforcement operation was part of sustained efforts to curb environmental violations, safeguard public infrastructure, and improve sanitation across communities in the state.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that the exercise was carried out across several strategic locations known for recurring waste disposal offences.

According to him, enforcement teams monitored and intercepted offenders at key areas including Meiran, Command, Ayobo-Ipaja, Moshalashi Bus Stop, Egbeda, Isheri Roundabout, Igando, Abaranje, and Ikotun.

He noted that dumping waste on road medians has remained a persistent challenge, contributing to blocked drainage channels, environmental degradation, and damage to public infrastructure.

“Indiscriminate dumping of waste on road medians is unacceptable and undermines government efforts to maintain a clean, safe, and sustainable environment. LAWMA will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement operations across the State to deter environmental violations and ensure compliance with extant regulations,” he stated.

The operation led to the arrest of seven suspects—four males and three females—who were reportedly caught in the act of disposing waste illegally at different points along the monitored routes.

The offenders were subsequently handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Task Force for prosecution in line with existing environmental laws.

LAWMA further urged residents and business operators to patronise approved Private Sector Participants (PSP) and make use of designated waste collection systems, stressing that proper waste management remains a shared civic responsibility.

The Authority reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on environmental abuse, adding that intelligence-driven surveillance and enforcement operations would continue across Lagos State to promote cleaner and healthier communities.
