President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, on his election as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee on Budget and Administration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Presidency, Tinubu described Ibrahim’s election as a significant achievement for both Nigeria and the international community, noting that it comes at a critical period when the UN is pursuing key financial and institutional reforms.

The President said the election, which occurred only weeks after Ibrahim assumed office as Nigeria’s envoy to the UN, reflects international confidence in his competence, leadership and wealth of experience.

“Your election to chair this important committee, within weeks of your official resumption at the UN, validates your wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Ibrahim’s previous service in both the public and private sectors has equipped him with the strategic leadership skills required to oversee the committee’s responsibilities.

He also highlighted the ambassador’s credentials as a legal scholar with expertise in international taxation and business administration, saying his professional background has demonstrated a strong understanding of global governance and financial systems.

“Your previous roles in both the private and public sectors distinctly equip you to provide the steady, strategic leadership required for this important responsibility,” Tinubu added.

Expressing confidence in the ambassador’s capacity to excel in the position, the President said Ibrahim’s experience and commitment to excellence would strengthen Nigeria’s representation at the United Nations and contribute to the work of the Fifth Committee.

He further noted that the appointment would support the broader objectives of the UN at a time when the organisation is focused on improving accountability, institutional efficiency and long-term sustainability.

“Congratulations once again on this remarkable achievement and on the confidence reposed in you by the international community,” Tinubu stated.

The Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly is responsible for administrative and budgetary matters and plays a central role in overseeing the organisation’s financial management and resource allocation.
