Lagos Bans Goods, Heavy Luggage on Public Buses from June 1

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has announced a ban on the transportation of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public buses operating across the state, with enforcement set to begin on June 1, 2026.

The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.

According to LAMATA, the decision followed increasing complaints from commuters and operational difficulties caused by the growing use of regulated buses for conveying goods and bulky items, a situation the authority said has negatively affected passenger comfort, safety, and the efficiency of transport services.

The agency explained that the resolution was reached during a strategic meeting involving LAMATA officials and heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies. At the meeting, stakeholders reportedly agreed that the practice should be stopped and properly reorganised in order to maintain a sustainable transport system that protects commuters while also supporting operators.

“LAMATA emphasised that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising. Any bus driver found violating the directive by conveying goods during the suspension period will face immediate sack and be blacklisted,” the statement quoted.

The authority further warned that any ground staff or LAMATA personnel stationed at terminals or loading points who aid, permit, or facilitate the loading of goods onto regulated buses would also face immediate dismissal.

“In addition, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception,” the statement added.

LAMATA maintained that there would be zero tolerance for violations, stressing that the state government remains committed to restoring order, safety, and operational efficiency within the public transportation system.

The agency therefore urged commuters, transport operators, terminal officials, and members of the public to comply fully with the directive and seek alternative means for transporting goods.

It reaffirmed its commitment to providing Lagos residents with a safe, reliable, and commuter-friendly transport system.
