A commercial dispatch rider has died after crashing into a containerized trailer at Ilupeju Bypass in Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said.
LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, said the accident occurred after the rider allegedly struggled for right of way with a commercial mini bus, popularly known as “Korope,” before losing control and colliding with the moving trailer along the busy corridor.
The rider reportedly died instantly from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the agency, LASTMA officials stationed around the Mushin axis quickly responded to distress calls, recovered the victim’s body trapped beneath the truck and managed traffic to reduce congestion caused by the incident.
Officials of the State Environmental Health Management Unit later evacuated the corpse, while the damaged motorcycle and the trailer were handed over to the police for further investigation.
Security operatives from the Ilupeju Police Division also assisted during the rescue and evacuation operations.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki urged dispatch riders and articulated vehicle operators to obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless competition for road space.
“The essence of the recently concluded stakeholders’ engagement with courier and dispatch riders was fundamentally to sensitize and further educate operators on the imperative of safety consciousness,” Bakare-Oki said.
