LASU retains top spot as Nigeria’s most sought-after university, Sanwo-Olu rejoices

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed delight over the continued rise of Lagos State University, which has once again emerged as the most sought-after university in Nigeria in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, LASU recorded 84,426 applications, placing it ahead of other tertiary institutions in the country.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) followed with 78,240 applicants, while Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, and University of Benin ranked third, fourth, and fifth with 60,370, 58,895, and 55,425 applicants respectively.

Reacting in a press statement issued in Lagos through his media office, Governor Sanwo-Olu described LASU as “a beacon of academic excellence and national relevance,” noting that the development reflects the state government’s sustained investment in education.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to positioning LASU among the top 10 universities globally, saying the goal remains achievable through continuous reforms and strategic investment in the education sector.

“The improved performance of LASU is a direct reflection of our commitment to building an enabling academic environment that drives innovation and prosperity,” the Governor said.

He attributed the university’s success to “visionary leadership, dedicated faculty, and committed students,” supported by the THEMES Plus Agenda, which prioritises education funding, infrastructure development, and technological advancement.

Sanwo-Olu also commended the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, describing her leadership as transformative and instrumental to the institution’s growing national and international recognition.

He noted that under her leadership, LASU has implemented key reforms in academics, research, infrastructure, and student-centred learning, strengthening its competitiveness.

The Governor assured that the Lagos State Government would continue to support the university in sustaining its upward trajectory, urging staff and students to maintain the institution’s position as Nigeria’s most preferred tertiary institution.
