The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a nationwide restriction prohibiting Point-of-Sale (POS) operators from conducting business within 200 metres of all police stations and formations across Nigeria.
The directive was contained in an internal police wireless message circulated to commands nationwide, ordering immediate compliance and strict enforcement.
According to the communication, senior police officers were also warned that any violation recorded within their areas of responsibility would attract disciplinary measures.
The IGP said the decision followed concerns over what he described as the “alarming proliferation” of POS operators around police facilities. He noted that intelligence reports indicated that some of the operators had become linked to alleged bribery and other questionable financial transactions within and around police premises.
The directive stated that such activities were undermining ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
Expressing “utmost dismay” over the development, the police leadership warned that POS operations near police formations were increasingly being viewed as possible channels for corrupt practices.
The wireless message further instructed that no POS operator should be allowed to operate within a 200-metre radius of any police station, divisional headquarters, or other police formations nationwide.
It also stated that Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and heads of formations would be held “vicariously liable” for any breach recorded within their jurisdictions.
