The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen its healthcare system through major infrastructure expansion, manpower development and policy reforms aimed at improving access to quality medical services across the state.
Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing, highlighting key achievements of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He said the government is targeting the training of over 2,500 additional healthcare professionals annually through the ongoing expansion of Lagos State University College of Medicine.
According to him, renovation and conversion works are ongoing across Ikeja, Yaba and Gbagada campuses, with new academic annexes being developed to increase teaching and clinical training capacity.
He added that lecture capacity will rise from 300 to 1,600 seats, alongside 1,600 laboratory spaces and 110 academic offices to support medical education.
Abayomi also noted that the reforms extend beyond training, with the government strengthening primary healthcare delivery and improving system-wide coordination.
He explained that the Primary Health Care Board has been delineated into six health districts, each headed by a permanent secretary to improve oversight and bring healthcare closer to residents.
The commissioner further revealed that the state is pursuing policy reforms to integrate traditional medicine into mainstream healthcare delivery, describing it as part of efforts to build a more inclusive and accessible health system.
He said the initiative will ensure proper regulation and standards while recognising the role of traditional medicine practitioners within the healthcare framework.
Abayomi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure, improving manpower development and widening access to quality medical services across Lagos State.
