The Federal Government has approved 150 as the minimum admission cut-off mark for all universities in Nigeria, covering both public and private institutions.
The decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during the 2026 admission policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja on Monday, May 11, 2026.
According to resolutions reached at the meeting, no candidate will be eligible for admission into any Nigerian university if they score below 150 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). However, institutions are still allowed to set higher cut-off marks depending on course requirements and competition.
The same minimum benchmark has also been adopted for colleges of nursing sciences nationwide, making 150 the standard entry requirement for nursing programmes across the country.
The policy was part of decisions taken at the annual national admissions meeting, which brings together stakeholders in the education sector to harmonise entry requirements into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Officials at the meeting explained that the move is aimed at ensuring uniformity in admission standards, improving quality control, and strengthening fairness in the selection process for higher institutions.
The 2026 policy meeting is expected to guide all admission processes for the 2026/2027 academic session across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
