LASTMA retraining boosts road efficiency, improves motorist relations

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says its ongoing training and retraining programme for personnel is yielding tangible improvements in traffic control operations and engagement with road users across the state.

According to a statement made available to journalists on Monday by the agency’s Public Affairs Officer, Adedayo Taofiq Aribidesi, the initiative is part of reforms introduced by the General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, to strengthen professionalism and service delivery.

The agency said the programme is designed to move officers beyond routine traffic duties by equipping them with skills in conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, crisis management and effective communication.

It added that personnel are also being trained in modern traffic management techniques, including coordinated incident response and data-driven deployment, to improve efficiency on major roads.

The statement noted that the intervention has led to quicker clearance of obstructions, improved handling of accidents and a reduction in secondary incidents caused by traffic congestion.

It further highlighted improved interactions between LASTMA officials and motorists, with reduced tension and better compliance resulting from more professional conduct.

The agency emphasised that ethics, transparency and accountability are central to the retraining process, contributing to a decline in cases of misconduct and strengthening public confidence.

It added that the initiative has boosted morale among officers and reinforced a culture of professionalism within the agency.

LASTMA also noted that collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including emergency response agencies and training institutions, has enhanced the effectiveness of the programme.

The agency reiterated its commitment to sustained capacity development as a key strategy for improving traffic management and supporting economic activities in Lagos.
