Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended Nigerian athlete, Rukayat Suleimon, for her historic gold medal win at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan, Armenia.
Suleimon etched her name in history as the first visually impaired female sambist globally to secure a gold medal, marking a major milestone for both Nigeria and the African continent in the sport.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised her resilience and courage, describing the feat as a proud moment for Lagos State and the nation.
He noted that Suleimon, a Lagos-based judo champion, demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in the women’s 54kg category, overcoming opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to clinch the top prize.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that winning gold on her international debut reflects a high level of discipline, preparation and competitive spirit.
He further described the athlete as a role model whose achievement would inspire young Nigerians, particularly girls, to pursue their ambitions regardless of limitations.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting talents capable of projecting Lagos and Nigeria positively on the global stage.
Suleimon’s victory highlights the growing recognition of inclusive sports and Nigeria’s rising profile in international competitions.
