A Twitter user has shared the photo of the heartbreaking moment a 5-year-old girl, Shaniya Davis, was traded off by her mother, to a man who would go on to rape and kill her.

Shaniya Davis would be 15 years old now if her mother hadn’t traded her to pay off a $200 drug debt with Mario Andrette McNeill.

Instead, Shaniya was sexually assaulted and her body was left by the side of a country road. Her mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, is serving a sentence of at least 17½ years. McNeill is on death row.

Sharing the heartbreaking photo on Twitter, crime show host, Christopher Duett, wrote;

“Heartbreaking photo of 5 year old Shaniya Davis being carried away by Mario Andrette McNeill after Shaniya’s mother gave her up to cover a $200 drug debt. Shortly after this photo McNeill raped and murdered Shaniya.
RIP Shaniya Davis.

In case anyone is wondering the man in the photo is now on death row and the drug addict who birthed her (not calling her a mom) got 17 years in prison.”

However, investigation had revealed that few months before 5-year-old Shaniya Davis was raped and murdered in 2009, law officers made a drug raid on her family’s home. The officers’ report mentioned the children, but no one alerted Cumberland County social workers.

Around the same time, Cumberland County school officials had concerns about Shaniya’s family. They, too, failed to tell the Department of Social Services until it was too late.

Shaniya was murdered by her mother’s boyfriend, Mario Andrette McNeill, who took the 5-year-old from her trailer off Murchison Road on Nov. 10, 2009, as repayment for a drug debt. McNeill then drove Shaniya to a Lee County hotel where he raped her. The child’s body was found six days later, hidden in underbrush along a rural roadside. She had been suffocated.

McNeill was sentenced to death on May 29, 2013. Four months later, Shaniya’s mother, Antoinette Davis, was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges and sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Among the findings in Shaniya’s report:

•Child protection personnel had held discussions with law enforcement agencies about their responsibility to report child abuse or neglect, but the message may not have been reaching law officers who work in narcotics or undercover.

•County health care providers offered services to Shaniya’s family, but there was a failure in following through with those services.

•There was a lack of communication between DSS and community professionals about the mother’s identified needs and services.
