JMG Limited has urged engineering students to complement their academic qualifications with practical technical skills, professional networking and deliberate career planning to improve their competitiveness in the labour market.

The company gave the advice during its sponsorship and participation in the induction ceremony of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Student Federation, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Chapter, held on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Speaking at the event, JMG Limited’s Recruitment Specialist, Anthony Chikeluba Uzokwe, who facilitated a career development session, challenged the students to begin preparing for the demands of the professional world before graduation.

He advised them to develop strong curriculum vitae, acquire relevant technical and soft skills, and establish credible professional profiles on LinkedIn to expand their networks and improve their access to career opportunities.

Uzokwe emphasised that academic qualifications alone might not be sufficient to guarantee success in an increasingly competitive employment market, noting that students must also demonstrate practical competencies and the ability to adapt to workplace demands.

“Students must be intentional about preparing for the careers they aspire to. Beyond academic qualifications, developing specialised skills, building a strong professional profile and creating meaningful networks are important steps towards becoming competitive in today’s job market,” he said.

Through its participation, JMG exposed the students to industry perspectives on the transition from academic learning to professional engineering practice, stressing the importance of bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and the practical requirements of the workplace.

The engagement also highlighted the value of early career preparation, particularly for engineering students seeking to understand employers’ expectations, identify relevant professional development opportunities and position themselves for emerging opportunities in the sector.

JMG’s sponsorship of the induction ceremony forms part of its support for engineering education and youth development, as the company seeks to contribute to the development of skilled professionals needed to strengthen Nigeria’s engineering and industrial sectors.
