The Ondo state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association has kicked against the plan by the federal government to invite Chinese doctors to the country.
The NMA in a statement issued by its state chairman, Dr. Wale Oke, said Nigeria has more than enough public health researchers in the country who we have not been harnessed before talking of Chinese importation.
The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, on Friday, said that Chinese doctors, nurses and medical experts would arrive in Nigeria in a few days to assist in the fight against COVID-19.
The minister said this during a briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.
Cases in Nigeria have reached 210 as the global figure also surpassed one million mark. He said Nigeria was also exploring the possibility of producing some medical equipments after key stakeholders met in Abuja on Thursday.
The coming of the Chinese medical experts was announced just as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said efforts to contain COVID-19 in Nigeria were being limited by finance,
According to him, Nigeria has many tested and trusted medical personnel who are capable of tackling any health challenge.
He said, “We have more than enough public health researchers in Nigeria who have not been harnessed before talking of Chinese importation
“The number of infected persons in Nigeria is still under 250 with only 4 deaths. That means Nigerian is doing well and we have been commended by different bodies including World Health Organisation.
“So why the need to import Chinese doctors when have capable medical doctors in Nigeria. Our government should not undermine our efforts at tacking the disease.
“Nigerians should prevail on the government not to take such decision which is not necessary at this time
“Unverified claim also have it that it was when Chinese doctors got to Italy that they started having exponential deaths”
