A political analyst based in Akure, Elder Fessy Toba Olabode on Tuesday proferred solution to political unrest across the country saying the jumbo pay at the National Assembly need be “debased”.
Speaking with journalists in Akure, Elder Olabode urged the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to work towards making the remuneration of law makers at all levels less attractive.
Until that is done, he said, politicians shall continue to make elections a do or die affair, a trend which he said will continue to jeopardise the interest of the nation.
While commending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for postponing the 2019 general elections, he noted that as the overall Umpire, they know what is best for the nation, adding that Nigerians should cooperate with the electoral body to have a credible election.
Postponement, he said, is a welcomed development, saying, ” it is only the timing that is not good enough, the notice was too short, adequate information was needed to get people on their toes”.
According to him, learning is a continuous exercise knowing full well that all these challenges are ways of learning to enable us develop as a nation.
He also appealed to people not to be discouraged to perform the exercise which comes up in every four_four years, “if INEC demands a week to have a credible election, they should be allowed”.
He how ever urged Nigerians to pray that things work out well, adding that,” what is important is a peaceful election void of shedding innocent blood”.
