Former Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, is set to deliver the annual lecture of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, as part of activities marking its 2026 Press Week.
Peterside, a leadership and management expert with experience in public policy and organisational transformation, will speak on the theme, “Politics, Ports and the Public Interest: The Media’s Catalytic Role in Driving Economic Growth.”
The lecture is expected to examine the relationship between politics, the maritime sector and the media, with particular focus on the role journalism can play in promoting economic growth and advancing the public interest.
A major issue expected to feature prominently at the lecture is whether the media can serve as a catalyst in Nigeria’s quest to build a trillion-dollar economy.
According to the organisers, Peterside’s presentation will explore the strategic importance of ports as gateways to economic activity, the influence of politics on the sector and the capacity of the media to shape public discourse, influence policy and promote accountability.
The former NIMASA boss is expected to draw on his experience in leadership, governance, public policy and the maritime sector to examine some of the challenges and opportunities surrounding Nigeria’s economic development.
The annual lecture is one of the major events scheduled for the 2026 NUJ Lagos Press Week, which will run from Monday, September 28 to Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The lecture will hold by 10:00 a.m. at the Radio Lagos/Eko FM Multipurpose Hall, Lagos Television (LTV) Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
Other activities lined up for the Press Week include the Chapel Rendezvous, scheduled for Thursday, October 1, from 4:00 p.m. within the LTV premises.
On Friday, October 2, the council will hold a Juma’at Service by 1:00 p.m. at the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, Central Business District (CBD), Alausa, Ikeja.
Later that day, the council will host its Gala and Awards Night by 4:00 p.m. at the BOS Hall, LTV Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
The week-long programme will climax with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, October 4, from 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Christ the Light (Interdenominational), CBD, Alausa, Ikeja.
In a statement signed by the chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, the council called on journalists across the state to turn out in large numbers and participate actively in the activities.
The council said the Press Week would provide media practitioners with an opportunity to network, exchange ideas, strengthen professional relationships and celebrate the contributions of journalists to society.
It noted that the gathering would also enable journalists and other stakeholders to reflect on the profession, promote unity within the media and renew their commitment to responsible and professional journalism.
The 2026 NUJ Lagos Press Week is expected to bring together journalists, media executives and other stakeholders for discussions on issues affecting the profession and the wider society, while also celebrating the achievements and contributions of media practitioners.
