TBEA to establish power equipment industrial park in Nigeria

The Federal Government has secured a commitment from leading Chinese power equipment manufacturer, TBEA, to establish a power and energy equipment industrial park in Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, secured the commitment during a high-level meeting with the company at its headquarters in Beijing, China, as part of his working visit to engage original equipment manufacturers and technical partners involved in the Presidential Power Initiative.

The proposed industrial park is expected to position Nigeria as a manufacturing and export hub for critical power-sector equipment, reduce dependence on imports, create jobs and promote the development of indigenous suppliers.

According to a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, Tegbe described TBEA as a long-term strategic development partner rather than merely a contractor, stressing the Federal Government’s commitment to attracting investors who would bring technology transfer and local capacity development alongside capital.

The minister said the government was seeking partnerships that would contribute not only to infrastructure development but also to the growth of local expertise and manufacturing capacity in the power sector.

At the meeting, TBEA also renewed its commitment to accelerate the delivery of ongoing transmission and distribution projects across the country.

The projects are expected to unlock more than 2,000 megawatts of stranded electricity capacity for consumers and strengthen bulk power supply to the Federal Capital Territory.

Tegbe urged the company to expedite the completion of projects under the Presidential Power Initiative, emphasising the need for contracted and substantially developed infrastructure to be completed so Nigerians can begin to benefit from the investments.

He also called for the extension of planned grid infrastructure to the East-West corridor, stressing the importance of expanding the reach and reliability of the national electricity grid.

The engagement further explored the feasibility of developing electric-vehicle charging infrastructure in Nigeria, opening another potential area for investment as the country’s power system evolves alongside renewable energy and energy-storage technologies.

The meeting with TBEA forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to deepen partnerships with international original equipment manufacturers and attract investments capable of strengthening Nigeria’s power infrastructure and technological capacity.

The proposed industrial park, if realised, could reduce the country’s reliance on imported power equipment while creating opportunities for local manufacturing, employment, technology transfer and exports.
