FG Adds 272MW to Lagos Grid, Upgrades Alausa, Lekki Transmission Stations

By Adebola Muili

The Federal Government has added 272 megawatts (MW) of bulk power capacity to Lagos State following the commissioning of upgraded transmission infrastructure at Alausa and Lekki.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, commissioned the projects on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the nation’s transmission network and address infrastructure bottlenecks affecting electricity supply.

According to a statement signed by Adeola Labzy, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Power, the Alausa project involved the replacement of an existing 30MVA transformer with a new 100MVA unit, raising the station’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA and increasing bulk power available to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by 80MW.

At Lekki, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) installed two additional 60MVA, 132/33kV power transformers and nine new 33kV feeders, doubling the substation’s 132/33kV capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA and adding approximately 192MW.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremonies, Tegbe said the projects reflected the administration’s deliberate approach to addressing structural challenges in the power sector.

“Identify the bottleneck. Invest in it. Remove the constraint. Unlock the capacity,” the minister said.

He said the upgrades were part of President Bola Tinubu’s determination to confront infrastructure constraints that had limited Nigeria’s economic potential, stressing that ageing equipment and stranded capacity would continue to be addressed nationwide.

The Lekki project, executed by Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited with support from the World Bank, also includes an additional 300MVA, 330/132kV transformer expected to be energised in November 2026.

Also speaking, TCN Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the Alausa project, executed by Shanghai Electric Limited under a World Bank-funded initiative, would, upon energisation, provide more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents through IKEDC.

Abdulaziz said the upgrade would strengthen grid stability while enabling more bulk electricity to reach distribution companies for onward supply within their franchise areas.

He described the project as evidence that TCN remained committed to building and sustaining a robust transmission network capable of transporting Nigeria’s growing power needs to various distribution load centres nationwide.

Tegbe commended TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), IKEDC, Shanghai Electric Group and the World Bank for their roles in delivering the projects.

He also congratulated Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for sustaining an enabling environment for infrastructure investment in the state.
