The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned the 250-bed Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a major boost to healthcare delivery in the state.
The commissioning took place on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, describing the facility as a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to provide residents with access to quality and advanced medical services.
Abiodun, who disclosed this in a post on his verified X account shortly after the commissioning, said the state-of-the-art medical facility was designed to strengthen the healthcare system and reduce the need for residents to travel outside Ogun State in search of specialised treatment.

According to him, the 250-bed facility represents a major investment in the health and wellbeing of the people, while reflecting his administration’s vision of building a healthcare system capable of responding effectively to the needs of the state’s growing population.
“Beyond its modern infrastructure, the Centre reflects our vision to build a healthcare system capable of providing advanced medical care, responding effectively to the needs of our growing population and reducing the need for our people to travel outside the state in search of quality treatment,” the governor said.
Abiodun expressed appreciation to the First Lady for honouring the state by commissioning what he described as a landmark project, while also acknowledging the presence of ministers, traditional rulers, senior government officials, healthcare professionals and other distinguished guests at the ceremony.

He stressed that healthcare infrastructure must ultimately translate into improved lives and better wellbeing for the people.
“For us, healthcare infrastructure only fulfils its purpose when it saves lives and improves the wellbeing of the people. This is the philosophy behind the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence and our broader investments in the health sector,” he said.
The governor said the project formed part of his administration’s broader Building Our Future Together agenda, assuring that the state government would continue to invest in projects and institutions capable of improving the quality of life of residents.
The Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence, located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, is a newly established tertiary healthcare facility designed to provide specialised medical services, including medical and surgical care, paediatrics and neonatal services, critical care, emergency services and advanced diagnostics.
The facility is expected to strengthen Ogun State’s position as a destination for quality healthcare and medical services in the Southwest.
