Panic in Cross River Community Over Alleged Cameroonian Military Incursion

Residents of Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State were reportedly thrown into panic on Wednesday following an alleged incursion by officers of the Cameroonian Armed Forces into Nigerian territory.

The allegation was made in a post on X by a user identified as Ozor Ndi Ozor, who claimed that more than 200 Cameroonian military personnel crossed into the border community without following established international boundary protocols.

According to the post, the officers, dressed in full military uniform and allegedly armed, entered the community, raising fears among residents and sparking concerns over security along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

The reported development created tension in the area as residents questioned the circumstances surrounding the presence of the foreign troops within Nigerian territory.

The X user further alleged that a former Vice Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.

According to the account, Mbia engaged the Cameroonian officers shortly after arriving at the scene and worked to calm tensions among community members.

His intervention, the report claimed, helped reassure residents amid fears that the incident could trigger a diplomatic or security confrontation between the two neighbouring countries.

“The presence of armed foreign military personnel on Nigerian soil without due authorisation is unacceptable and could have serious security implications,” Mbia was quoted as saying in the post.

The situation was subsequently brought under control, according to the report, while calls emerged for tighter border surveillance and improved security arrangements along the international boundary.

The alleged incident has renewed concerns over the porous nature of sections of the Nigeria-Cameroon border and the security challenges facing communities located in frontier areas.

As of press time, there was no official statement from the Nigerian military, the Cross River State Government or Cameroonian authorities confirming or denying the reported incursion.

Efforts to obtain independent verification of the claims were ongoing.

Observers say clarification from relevant authorities will be crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the alleged border breach and preventing future occurrences.
