The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Alhaji Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as OKI-OCEAN, over the murder of a 61-year-old retired teacher, Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, in Abeokuta, eight months after the incident.

The suspect allegedly confessed to attacking the deceased with a cutlass during a confrontation over money, telling investigators that he struck her on the neck, hands and laps before leaving her in the toilet of her residence.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday, October 23, 2026, saying the suspect was arrested on October 19 following sustained investigations by detectives attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta.

According to the police, the deceased was found dead in the toilet of her residence at Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on February 28, 2026, a day after she reportedly returned from a retirement celebration organised by her colleagues.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Homicide Section of the SCID for further investigation, leading to the arrest of Ayinde, who allegedly linked the incident to a financial disagreement with the deceased.

During his interrogation, the suspect claimed that he had entrusted ₦3.45 million to the retired teacher for safekeeping and that she had promised to lend him an additional ₦1.55 million to enable him to raise ₦5 million to purchase a vehicle.

He said he visited her residence on the evening of Friday, February 27, to demand the money, alleging that she repeatedly put off his request. According to his account, an argument ensued when he asked her to return his money, and she allegedly ordered him to leave her apartment.

The suspect told the police that he followed the deceased into the toilet, where he picked up a cutlass lying on the ground and struck her on the neck, hands and laps.

He further admitted that after she fell, he lifted her and placed her on the toilet seat. He claimed that he did not seek medical assistance because he feared that neighbours would discover what had happened.

The suspect also admitted taking the deceased’s mobile phone from the house and carrying it to his residence. According to Babaseyi, the phone was subsequently tracked during the investigation, helping detectives to identify and apprehend him.

In the interrogation video released alongside the police statement, Ayinde expressed regret over his alleged action, saying he had felt bad about it since the incident.

“I blame myself say I do that thing,” he said in Pidgin English, when asked about his actions.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation and the establishment of all relevant facts.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the investigating officers for their persistence, professionalism and commitment, reiterating the command’s resolve to investigate serious crimes thoroughly and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.

The command also urged residents to resolve disputes lawfully rather than take the law into their own hands, advising members of the public to report criminal activities promptly.
