Commercial Driver Dies in Multiple-Vehicle Crash at Cele-Oshodi Axis

A commercial bus driver has lost his life in a multiple-vehicle collision along the Cele inward Oshodi corridor of Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.

The fatal accident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a commercial mini bus, popularly known as “Korokpe,” and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck with registration number EPE 554 YC.

LASTMA, in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations by security personnel at the scene indicated that the driver of the commercial bus sustained severe injuries and died instantly from the impact of the crash.

“Preliminary investigations conducted by security personnel at the scene revealed that the driver of the commercial mini bus sustained grievous injuries and died instantly due to the devastating impact of the collision,” the statement said.

The traffic management agency disclosed that its operatives, who were on routine monitoring duties within the area, responded swiftly to the incident by coordinating emergency operations, securing the crash scene and managing traffic to prevent further congestion on the busy route.

According to LASTMA, officers worked alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Cele-Ijesha Division to recover the remains of the deceased driver, which were subsequently released to family members.

The agency further stated that all vehicles involved in the accident were evacuated from the roadway and handed over to the police for further investigation aimed at determining the immediate and remote causes of the crash and establishing liability where necessary.

Despite the disruption caused by the incident, LASTMA said prompt intervention by its personnel helped restore the free flow of traffic along the affected corridor.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Manager of LASTMA extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists, particularly commercial transport operators, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and drive responsibly.

The authority reiterated the need for caution on Lagos roads, stressing that compliance with traffic laws remains essential to reducing avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
