Lekki Building Collapse: One dead, seven rescued as search continues

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of one person and the rescue of seven others following the partial collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

The agency said one worker remained trapped as emergency responders intensified search and rescue operations at the site on Friday.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said rescuers were working with relevant agencies to ensure no victim was left behind.

“Our priority remains saving lives. We are working methodically and in partnership with LASBCA and SEHMU to ensure no victim is left behind while maintaining safety for responders,” he said.

According to LASEMA, the incident occurred at about 12:19 p.m. at No. 1 Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, Lekki Phase 1. Nine persons were affected, with seven adult males rescued alive and stabilised by emergency medical teams.

The agency said one adult male was confirmed dead and his remains recovered, while efforts were ongoing to locate another worker believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

Search and rescue operations, it added, were continuing with the support of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and other emergency responders.

Meanwhile, LASEMA has concluded recovery operations following a truck accident on Old Abeokuta Road inward Abattoir, where a driver trapped in a crushed Toyota Highlander was rescued alive.

The agency said the accident occurred late Thursday when a truck conveying a 40-foot container reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into the SUV.

The driver sustained severe fractures to both legs and his left arm and was rescued by emergency personnel before being taken to hospital for treatment. Two other occupants escaped unhurt.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the coordinated efforts of emergency agencies involved in the operation.

“This incident underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration and public compliance with traffic advisories during emergencies. Our teams worked through the night to save a life and restore the corridor for commuters,” he said.

LASEMA said recovery operations had been completed and normal traffic restored along the affected corridor.
