Truck crushes bus, injures female POS operator in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious road accident involving a 40-foot container truck that overturned and crushed a commercial mini bus at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi in Lagos, leaving a female Point of Sale (POS) operator severely injured.

The incident occurred along the service lane near the Police Tactical Team Station after the driver reportedly lost control of the articulated vehicle while in transit.

According to a statement issued by LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the truck also rammed into roadside shops and business outlets within the area after veering off its lane.

“Preliminary security investigations revealed that the articulated truck, conveying a fully loaded 40-foot container, veered uncontrollably off its designated trajectory before descending devastatingly upon the affected commercial axis,” the statement said.

LASTMA disclosed that a female roadside POS operator sustained severe injuries to both legs during the accident.

The victim was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital by officers of the Police Tactical Team stationed in the area for urgent medical treatment.

The agency said its operatives immediately mobilised to the scene to manage traffic, secure the area and coordinate rescue operations with security agencies and other emergency responders.

LASTMA further confirmed that the truck driver was apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation and possible prosecution.

A recovery truck was later deployed to evacuate the overturned articulated vehicle and the damaged mini bus, while police operatives from the Orile-Iganmu Division commenced preliminary investigations into the incident.

Reacting to the accident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged operators of articulated vehicles and logistics companies to ensure regular mechanical checks on heavy-duty trucks, especially braking systems and other critical safety components.

He warned that poor vehicle maintenance remained a major threat to lives, public infrastructure and road safety in Lagos State.
