Commonwealth nurses honours Sanwo-Olu as most nurses-friendly governor

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been honoured with a Commonwealth recognition as the Most Nurses-Friendly Administrator in Nigeria for his administration’s sustained investments in healthcare infrastructure and workers’ welfare.

The recognition was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The award was presented by the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Federation during its conference in Abuja, where it commended Lagos State for what it described as “visionary leadership” in strengthening healthcare delivery under the THEMES+ Agenda.

Presenting the award at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, the Chairman of the Lagos Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Mrs. Christianah Adeboboye, said the honour reflected the administration’s commitment to the nursing profession and healthcare development.

She said: “The presentation of an Award of Excellence to Governor Sanwo-Olu as the Best Nurses-Friendly Governor is a testament to your administration’s unwavering commitment to the healthcare sector, particularly to the welfare of nurses and the advancement of the profession in Lagos State.”

Adeboboye noted that despite challenges such as workforce shortages and welfare concerns, the state government had made notable improvements that reassured health workers of better conditions.

“As healthcare workers, we are faced with a lot of challenges that border on our welfare, including accommodations and pressure arising from shortages of nurses. But with the consistent actions that have been taken by the Sanwo-Olu government in the sector, we have seen improvements that have given us reassurance of our welfare and the future of our profession,” she said.

She further commended the administration’s investments in healthcare infrastructure, improved working conditions, prompt salary payments, recruitment of healthcare personnel, insurance coverage, and sustained support for health institutions.

According to her, these efforts have strengthened morale and improved service delivery across Lagos.
