Lagos deepens digital governance push, records 737,000 traffic violations

The Lagos State Government says it is intensifying efforts to deploy technology and innovation to improve governance, public service delivery and security across the State.

Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, disclosed this on Wednesday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the seventh anniversary of the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu at Alausa.

Alake said the State’s Intelligent Transport System had recorded over 737,000 traffic violations, noting that digital surveillance and enforcement infrastructure deployed under the Safe City initiative had improved traffic compliance and strengthened security management across Lagos.

According to him, the Ministry has continued to record progress in digital governance, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, science education, enterprise architecture and smart city development.

He disclosed that the government had evaluated 192 out of 211 Ministries, Departments and Agencies under its Enterprise Architecture initiative, while 232 application workloads had been captured to standardise processes, reduce IT project costs and improve operational efficiency.

The Commissioner also revealed that the Lagos State Digital Service Platform now attracts over 250,000 monthly visitors, reflecting increased adoption of digital government services by residents.

Speaking on artificial intelligence, Alake announced the rollout of the Lagos AI Guidelines and the launch of an AI-powered chatbot designed to improve service delivery and support e-governance across the State.

“We remain committed to building a technologically advanced, inclusive and globally competitive Lagos through innovation-driven governance and strategic investments in science and technology,” he said.

Alake further stated that Lagos continued to strengthen its innovation ecosystem through initiatives such as the Art of Technology Conference, which he said had attracted thousands of participants and stakeholders from across the world.

On cybersecurity and data protection, the Commissioner said the State had improved its cyber resilience through strategic collaborations, awareness campaigns and the deployment of 109 Data Protection Officers across Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

He added that the Science Experience Centre had been completed to promote STEM education among students in Lagos State schools.

The Commissioner also commended students from Lagos who excelled at the Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award competitions in 2024 and 2025, describing their achievements as evidence of the State Government’s investment in science and innovation.

Highlighting the activities of the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council, Alake said the council had supported over 75 startups and facilitated more than N900 million in research grants to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

He further disclosed that the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency had registered over 6.4 million residents under the Lagos Identity Card Project to support planning, governance and efficient service delivery across the State.
