The Supervising Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary (TG/PS), Education District III, Dr. Idowu Olufunke Oyetola, has charged principals across the District to intensify efforts towards improving academic performance as schools prepare for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with a renewed drive to secure the top position in Lagos State WAEC rankings.
Dr. Oyetola gave the charge on Wednesday during her maiden strategic meeting with principals held at the District Headquarters, Falomo, Ikoyi, where she outlined her vision for improved academic outcomes across primary and secondary schools under the District and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to quality education delivery.
She noted that Education District III currently ranks second in the state WAEC performance index, urging school administrators to consolidate on the achievement and work collectively towards attaining the top position in subsequent examination cycles.
According to her, sustained academic excellence must be anchored on discipline, integrity, and strict adherence to examination ethics, warning that the District would maintain zero tolerance for examination malpractice.
“Schools must not only maintain standards but surpass them. We are committed to excellence that is measurable, and that begins with integrity in our examination processes,” she said.
Dr. Oyetola directed principals to ensure that all eligible students are duly registered and adequately prepared for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), in line with existing state education policies.
Emphasising the importance of data in planning and administration, she described accurate record-keeping as critical to effective school management, instructing principals to ensure the timely and precise capture of staff and students’ data on the state education database.
On administrative compliance, she reiterated the directive requiring education officers due for retirement to give at least six months’ notice, noting that such compliance is necessary for smooth workforce planning and orderly transition processes.
The TG/PS also stressed the importance of co-curricular activities, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to holistic education. She directed all schools to actively participate in the 15 approved state competitions, ensuring adequate preparation and logistics to enhance student participation and performance.
On health and safety in schools, Dr. Oyetola warned that all food vendors operating within school premises must strictly adhere to approved regulations, adding that principals would be held accountable for any breaches recorded in their schools.
She further urged staff members to sustain enrolment in the Lagos State Health Scheme (Ilera Eko) and encouraged increased student participation, in line with the #GreaterLagos development agenda.
Reaffirming her commitment to improved learning outcomes, Dr. Oyetola charged school administrators to remain focused and proactive in their duties, noting that every school in the District must strive for excellence in both academic and moral standards to secure a stronger future for learners.
