Army confirms, defends influencer’s arrest, denies abuse claims

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a social media influencer, Justice Chidiebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” over allegations of inciting discontent among serving soldiers.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the arrest followed complaints linked to online discussions about the welfare and feeding conditions of troops.

According to the Army, preliminary findings indicate that the influencer engaged some personnel in conversations that allegedly encouraged dissatisfaction within the ranks and touched on sensitive matters.

The statement noted that such interactions could undermine discipline and pose risks to national security, stressing that attempts by civilians to influence military personnel in ways that could weaken command structures would not be tolerated.

Chidiebere was reportedly detained alongside some of the soldiers involved. While the affected personnel remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

However, the Army’s account has been challenged by reports from Sahara Reporters, which alleged that the activist was subjected to abuse during his detention. The platform claimed he was held under harsh conditions for several hours before being transferred to security authorities.

The allegations have sparked reactions from civil society groups and legal observers, who questioned whether due process was followed in handling the case. They argued that even where allegations exist, suspects should be treated in line with the law and not subjected to degrading conditions.

The Nigerian Army, however, maintained that its actions were within the bounds of the law and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline and safeguarding national security.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Chidiebere or his legal representatives, and it remains unclear what charges may be filed against him.
