The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, to Force Headquarters, Abuja, over the alleged extra-judicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, was condemned by the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, who assured that justice would be served.

According to a statement issued on April 28, 2026, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the deceased was apprehended following credible intelligence linking him to the attempted waybill of a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

Police operatives attached to Area Command Effurun were subsequently deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody.

Edafe, however, disclosed that the officer leading the team acted خلاف established procedures.

“The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” he said.

The Police Commissioner immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for preliminary investigation.

“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” Edafe added.

The Command reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, and professional conduct, stressing its zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions.

Oyeniyi also condoled with the family of the deceased and assured them of justice.

“The Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement added.

He further appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
