Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday openly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, effectively setting the tone for succession politics within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The endorsement followed Hamzat’s declaration of interest at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, attended by members of the State Executive Council, party leaders and the influential Governor’s Advisory Council.
Among those present were former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and ex-senator, Ganiyu Solomon.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, stressing that Hamzat is well-equipped, experienced and fully prepared to take over the reins of governance.
He hinged his endorsement on the deputy governor’s performance in office, loyalty and deep understanding of the workings of government, having worked closely with him for nearly two terms.
The governor also referenced the enduring political structure of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the unfolding development reflects a long-standing leadership vision for Lagos.
Describing the gathering as a “family consultation,” Sanwo-Olu said stakeholders were united in backing Hamzat’s aspiration.
The early move, coming ahead of party primaries, signals a calculated effort to consolidate consensus within the APC, as jockeying for the state’s top job gradually gathers momentum.
Hamzat, a former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure and two-term deputy governor, is considered a central figure in Lagos politics, though he has yet to formally flag off his campaign.
Reacting to the endorsement, Hamzat expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu, describing the gesture as a significant vote of confidence.
“I am deeply honoured by the endorsement of my governor, my brother and my friend,” he said.
He noted that having worked closely with the governor in the service of Lagos, he does not take the trust reposed in him for granted.
Hamzat pledged to sustain ongoing development efforts in the state, assuring Lagosians of purposeful and transparent leadership.
“I remain committed to building on the progress we have made and to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose,” he added.
