BREAKING: Tinubu suspends EFCC Chairman, Bawa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension of Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, indefinitely, to allow proper investigation into the allegations against him while in office.

This is contained in a statement released Wednesday by Willie Bassey, Director, Information of the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The President’s suspension of the anti-graft agency boss follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

“Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement added.

It could be recalled that barely four months ago, not fewer than Forty-two anti-corruption civil society organisations (CSOs) called for the removal of the just suspended antigraft agency chairman.

The CSOs made the demand in Lagos at a gathering to protest what they described as the incessant disobedience of court orders by Bawa and alleged the politicisation of the activities of the agency under him.

According to the CSOs, the EFCC under Bawa, had chosen to become an institution known for brazenly disobeying orders of courts in a manner that does not only undermine the institutions of Nigeria’s democracy, but also indicates a contradiction of the anti-corruption agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration..

The CSOs, also petitioned the National Assembly against the “Politicisation of the EFCC, Disobedience of Court Orders, and Infringement on Human Rights of Nigerians” the previous day, said they were rugged anti-corruption and pro-democracy activists, who had been in the struggle for over 30 years and would continue the ‘Bawa Must Go’ protest until he leaves office.

Though, the President Muhammadu Buhari administration couldn’t do anything about the CSOs calls and protests till its end.
