The Police in Delta State has arrested four journalists reporting for different news platforms including the Warri Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
The arrested reporters are: Matthew Omonigho of the DAILY POST, Edeki Egafe of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Francis Sadhere of Business Day and Christopher Odomhe, a freelance journalist.
However, the reason for their arrest is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
It was gathered that the police, a team of detectives, in their patrol van reportedly stormed the Press Centre of the Warri NUJ along Gbiaye Street in Warri at about 3:45 pm on Tuesday, picked and detained Omonigho for undisclosed reasons.
The NUJ Chairman in Delta, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu told DAILY POST that the officers stormed the Press Centre and arrested their reporter.
“They were looking for another reporter. They collected Omonigho’s phone, saw the person’s number and arrested him.
“When some journalists went to the command, the officers, again, checked their phones, saw the person’s number and arrested them.” he said.
However, the trio was detained also for undisclosed reasons.
The four journalists were alleged to have been dispossessed of their mobile phones.
The detectives suspected to be from the Force Headquarters declined to give reasons for the arrest of the four.
The condition of the four newsmen was unknown as at the time of filing the report.
State NUJ Chairman, Mr. Michael Ikeogwu, said efforts are ongoing to ensure their release.
Ikeogwu said he had reached the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, who assured that he (CP) “will not sleep” until the detained journalists were released.
