Kwara Woman Alleges Threats, Assault by Ex-Husband, Seeks Protection

By Adebola Isimijola, Lagos

A Kwara State woman, Ajani Taibat Titilayo, has accused her former husband, Peter Kayode Ajani, of repeated threats and physical abuse, raising fresh concerns over domestic violence and the safety of vulnerable persons in Nigeria.

Ajani, a native of Oke-Ode in Ifelodun Local Government Area, alleged that the abuse began during their marriage and persisted after their separation, leaving her in constant fear for her safety.

She further claimed that one of the most serious incidents involved an assault allegedly carried out by the current wife of Peter Kayode Ajani, whom she accused of acting on his instructions. According to her, the incident forms part of a sustained pattern of intimidation and harassment.

“I was constantly threatened and made to feel unsafe. The situation became unbearable, and I feared for my life,” she said.

The woman alleged that despite ending the relationship, the threats have continued, heightening her concerns about possible retaliation or further attacks.

Ajani also expressed fears tied to her religious identity, stating that as a Christian, she worries about potential threats from extremist groups if she returns to Nigeria.

“I am afraid that I could be harmed not only by my ex-husband but also by groups who may target me because of my faith,” she added.

She, however, expressed limited confidence in the ability of security agencies to guarantee her protection, noting that victims of domestic abuse often struggle to secure timely intervention.

The case underscores the persistent challenge of gender-based violence in the country, as advocacy groups continue to call for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women from abuse and intimidation.

Efforts to obtain comments from Peter Kayode Ajani and relevant law enforcement authorities were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
