The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has embarked on an indefinite strike with immediate effect nationwide to press for the implementation of different sets of memoranda of understanding (MOU) on funding of university education.

The Union took the decision at its National Executive Council, NEC meeting held at the Federal University of technology, Akure, FUTA.

Addressing newsmen, the ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said the union decided to resume the strike it suspended in September this year due to the failure of government to genuinely address unprecedented neglect and infrastructural decay in public universities in the country.

Professor Ogunyemi said all academic staff in public universities nationwide had been directed to withdraw their services until government fully implements all outstanding issues as contained in the Memoranda of Action, MOA of 2017 and concludes the renegotiation of the 2009 government/ASUU agreement.

In their remarks, two former Presidents of ASUU, Dr Nasir Fagge and Dipo Fashina said if not for the industrial actions and struggles by the Union for years, public university education would have collapsed totally in Nigeria.

ASUU called on Nigerians to prevail on government to shun the over bloated pattern of expenditure on political office holders and fund public education properly to save the future of youths.
