A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, over the unauthorised withdrawal of N1 million from a customer’s bank account through the unlawful access to a colleague’s computer.

Justice Ismail Ijelu, who delivered the judgment on Monday, October 19, 2026, ordered Nweke to pay a fine of N1 million within 30 days, failing which he would be remanded in a correctional centre for six months.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed this in a statement on the conviction, explaining that the case arose from an incident in which Nweke allegedly accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu without lawful authority.

According to the commission, the incident occurred on June 21, 2025, in Lagos and facilitated the unauthorised withdrawal of N1 million from an account belonging to Leelee Dumbari, domiciled with one of the new-generation banks.

The offence contravenes Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 subsequently arraigned Nweke on a one-count charge bordering on the unlawful withdrawal of the money from Dumbari’s account.

Nweke pleaded not guilty to the charge, prompting a full trial.

During the proceedings, prosecution counsel, M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses to establish the case against the defendant, while the defence called one witness.

At the conclusion of the trial, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty as charged and imposed the fine, with a six-month custodial term as the alternative for failure to pay within the stipulated 30 days.
