Three injured in multi-vehicle crash as truck suffers brake failure in Lagos

Three persons sustained varying degrees of injuries on Wednesday after a MACK flatbed truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into three other vehicles along the LASU–Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando, Lagos.

The victims, comprising one man and two women, were rescued from the wreckage by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders before being taken to hospital for treatment.

The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the statement, the truck lost control after its braking system failed, before ramming into a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles, causing a multiple-vehicle collision.

LASTMA said its officers, who were on routine patrol in the area, responded promptly to the scene, rescued the trapped victims and worked with officers of the Iba Police Division to evacuate the damaged vehicles and clear the road.

The agency added that the injured victims were taken to El-Shaddai Hospital for treatment, while traffic was effectively managed to restore the free flow of vehicles along the affected route.

Commenting on the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles were mechanically sound before embarking on any journey.

According to him, “Routine preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components remains indispensable in mitigating avoidable road traffic crashes and enhancing overall road safety across Lagos State.”

Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to obey traffic regulations and report road crashes and other emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, 3367, to facilitate prompt intervention.
