Residents expose fake policeman in Lagos, force commend vigilance

The Lagos State Police Command has commended residents for their vigilance after a 22-year-old man allegedly impersonating a police officer was apprehended and handed over to law enforcement authorities.

The suspect, identified as Onipede Tajudeen Ojo, was arrested after allegedly stealing a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal belongings.

According to the Police, Ojo allegedly wore the stolen camouflage uniform and attempted to pass himself off as a police officer.

His alleged plan was, however, thwarted when vigilant passersby observed that his conduct and mannerisms did not reflect those of a genuine officer. Their suspicion led them to question him, after which he was discovered to be an impostor and subsequently handed over to the Police.

In a statement on Monday, the Lagos State Police Command described the incident as a clear demonstration of the alertness and security consciousness of residents.

“The recent incidents are clear testimonies to the vigilance, alertness and security consciousness of the good people of Lagos State,” the Command stated.

The Police expressed appreciation to members of the public for supporting the Command’s security efforts through the timely reporting of suspicious activities.

The Command noted that collaboration between residents and security agencies remains crucial to sustaining peace, safety and security across the state.

Police authorities said the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

While praising the civic responsibility displayed by residents, the Command cautioned against jungle justice, stressing that no individual has the right to take the law into his or her hands regardless of the alleged offence committed by a suspect.

It advised members of the public to hand over suspected offenders to the Police or other relevant law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

The Command also reiterated its appeal to residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious persons, movements and activities to security agencies, while allowing due process to take its course.

Expressing gratitude for the public’s cooperation, the Police thanked Lagos residents, saying: “Thank You, E seun, Dalu, Nagode.”
