The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its crackdown on smuggling, intercepting three pump-action rifles, arresting three suspects and seizing contraband goods valued at over ₦3.22 billion.

Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Wale Adewole, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Ibadan on Thursday, saying the firearms interception was a major breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing anti-smuggling operations.

Adewole said the suspects arrested in connection with the recovered rifles are currently being investigated, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the smuggling syndicate.

According to him, the Command has activated its intelligence and enforcement units to ensure that all those linked to the illegal firearms shipment are brought to justice.

“The Command is working closely with the Customs Intelligence Unit, Customs Police Unit and the Legal Unit to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attempted smuggling of the firearms and ensure that all persons connected with the unlawful act are brought to justice,” he said.

The Customs boss explained that beyond the firearms seizure, officers of the Command intercepted a range of prohibited and restricted items across its operational area. The items include 1,537 bags of foreign parboiled rice, used clothing, used tyres, pharmaceuticals, cannabis sativa, tramadol, premium motor spirit (PMS) and vehicles used for smuggling activities.

He said the cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items stood at more than ₦3.22 billion.

In a related operation carried out through intelligence gathering and collaboration with the Amotekun Corps in Ibadan, the Command arrested a suspected fraudster accused of deceiving members of the public with promises of securing employment in the Nigeria Customs Service.

Adewole warned Nigerians against falling prey to recruitment racketeers, stressing that entry into the Service is strictly guided by transparent and approved procedures.

“Recruitment into the NCS is transparent, merit-based and conducted strictly through officially approved channels. Members of the public should disregard individuals who claim to offer employment opportunities in exchange for money,” he stated.

On revenue generation, the Acting Area Controller said the Command recorded improved performance between March and May 2026, generating ₦28.5 billion during the period.

He noted that the figure represents an eight per cent increase over the ₦26.23 billion collected within the same period in 2025, attributing the growth to enhanced compliance measures, intelligence-driven operations and the dedication of officers and men of the Command.

Adewole reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders, curbing illicit trade and supporting government efforts to strengthen national security and economic development.
