The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos State, has handed over 596,700 tablets of suspected controlled pharmaceutical products, a vehicle and two male suspects to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further investigation and regulatory action.
NAFDAC, in a statement on Friday, said the exhibits comprised seven cartons containing 346,700 tablets of Tamral Tramadol Hydrochloride 250mg and five cartons containing 250,000 tablets of Natizol 5mg. Also handed over were a black Toyota Hilux vehicle and the two suspects.
The agency said the handover was received by its Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, FSI, who will oversee further investigation and enforcement procedures.
According to the statement, the seized pharmaceutical products, vehicle and suspects were transferred to NAFDAC by the Customs Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illicit movement of controlled medicines.
The agency added that investigations into the case have commenced, while appropriate regulatory and legal actions will be taken in accordance with its mandate.
The development underscores the continued collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and NAFDAC in combating the trafficking, distribution and circulation of unregistered, controlled and potentially harmful pharmaceutical products across the country.
