The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a viral video circulating on social media which claims that some Fulani men were recently arrested in Ikorodu with arms and ammunition.

According to the Command, the footage being shared is an old video linked to an incident that occurred more than three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police warned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic among residents.

“The video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement said.

The Command noted that the recirculation of the old video as a recent development was capable of creating unnecessary fear and apprehension among members of the public.

“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents,” Adebisi stated, urging the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information.

The police further cautioned social media users and content creators against disseminating false or alarmist reports, warning that offenders would face legal consequences.

“The Command further warns social media users and content creators against the dissemination of false, unverified, and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder. Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai, has directed increased deployment of police personnel and operational assets to strategic locations, black spots, and entry and exit points across the state as part of ongoing security measures.

The Command said the deployments are being carried out in collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property.

Residents were encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear and to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities within their communities.

The statement emphasized that public cooperation remains critical to crime prevention and the maintenance of peace and security across Lagos State.
