The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a tailor, Qawiyu Oloyede, for allegedly circulating a fake bandit attack video on social media to stir fear and panic among residents.

Oloyede, said to be a resident of Sokoto Road, Atan-Ota, was reportedly apprehended after the video surfaced online, with police accusing him of spreading false information about a non-existent bandit invasion.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that he created and shared the video to attract followers on social media.

“I created the fake bandit attack and posted it on social media to gain followers,” he was quoted as saying.

He added that the Fulani herder featured in the video was a cattle rearer who usually grazed cows behind his shop.

“The Fulani man did not even want to participate in the act. I cannot read or write because I did not attend school. It was my apprentice that wrote the message attached to the video,” he said.

Oloyede also admitted to producing two similar videos earlier in the week, according to the police.

Confirming the arrest, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“The suspect is with the SCID,” Babaseyi stated.
